Shukla Paksha Panchami during Sawan month is observed as Nag Panchami. Usually Nag Panchami day falls two days after Hariyali Teej. Currently Nag Panchami falls in month of July and August in English calendar. Women worship Nag Devta and offer milk to snakes on this day. Women also pray for the wellness of their brothers and family.
Nag Panchami is a traditional worship of serpent Gods observed by Hindus throughout India. It is believed that prayers offered to snakes would reach serpent Gods and hence people also worship live snakes. While various several serpent Gods are worshiped on Nag Panchami, twelve snakes, in particular, are offered prayers. It includes Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Padma, Kambala, Karkotaka, Ashvatara, Dhritarashtra, Shankhapala, Kaliya, Takshaka, and Pingala are the twelve snakes that find mention in the Hindu scriptures. Temples, where grand celebrations for Nag Panchami are held, include Adiesha Temple in Andhra Pradesh, Nagaraja Temple in Kerala, Nagathamman Temple in Chennai and Hardevja Temple in Jaipur.
