Full moon day during Ashadha month is known as Guru Purnima day. Traditionally this day is reserved for Guru Puja or Guru Worship. On this day disciples offer Puja or pay respect to their Gurus. Guru refers to spiritual guide who enlighten disciples by his knowledge and teachings. Guru Purnima is also known as Vyasa Purnima and this day is commemorated as birth anniversary of Veda Vyasa. Veda Vyasa was the author as well as a character in the Hindu epic Mahabharata.
Hindus remember great sage Vyasa, who was the earliest guru of Hindu religion and the unique symbol of Guru-shishya tradition. On the other hand, Buddhist spend their entire day by practising yoga and remembering Lord Buddha, who gave the first sermon at Sarnath. In today’s time, Guru Purnima is celebrated by conducting various special programs by students in schools, colleges. Students express their gratitude in the form of gifts and flowers on the day of Guru Purnina.

The day everyone celebrates Guru Purnima was the day when Krishna-Dwaipayana Vyasa, the author of Mahabharata was born to sage Parashara and fishermen’s daughter Satyavati. Veda Vyasa was known for performing social service by gathering all Vedic and dividing them into several categories based on their use in rituals – Paila, Vaisampayana, Jaimini and Sumantu. Later on he then even divided the Vedas namely Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva.
